This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

Findekáno pushed the food around his plate. He didn’t doubt the cooks had done their usual wonderful job. It was just that he had no appetite. Breakfast he’d managed – his dratted cousin had been only too right that he needed to get food into him to make up for last night’s ill-advised coping via alcohol. But that accomplished, he had little desire for food. The entire court was in mourning, him most of all. And much as he’d love to demand what in the name of Manwë his father had been thinking, he already knew the answer – he hadn’t been.
