“Why do you torment yourself so?”

Míriel did not dignify that with an answer. It wasn’t as if she had any choice in the matter. Not anymore.

“You have but to say the word, Queen of Númenórë, and you will be the most beautiful and most powerful Queen the world has ever seen.”

“Blasphemy.”

She was pleased that she sounded almost bored.

“Hardly. You give me so much to work with…”

“I give you nothing, Sauron.”

“Oh? Can you truly say you are not tempted?”

She was surprised he had waited this long to assail her with the images – or that he leaned more on the sex appeal than power. They both knew where the real power lay, and it was not with her.

The vision that pushed its way insistently into her mind was her, but taller, with longer and more lustrous hair, eyes elven-bright, skin unmarred by blemish, wrinkle, or scar. For all she knew, it was Lúthien herself he showed her.

He chuckled.

“It is not. She had smaller breasts. Mortals prefer their women more voluptuous.”

His smirk turned lecherous.

“I could tell you more about her. She did more than just dance for Melkor, you know.”
