Ruminations on a Mother-Name
Drabble. Nerdanel, after her first son's birth, has a dream that conveys his mother-name.
Nerdanel dreamt of a blade above her son's wrist, and she woke weeping, reaching to Estelindë at the bedside for comfort. In her arms, Nelyafinwë stirred and squirmed, squalling a tiny cry, and Estelindë laid the newborn on his mother's chest.
"What is it?" she asked softly, and Nerdanel willed herself calm enough to speak, even if the dream still grasped her. "Some prophecy, a dream about him. This little one, there is evil in his future. I cannot understand, not - I did not see who. But I know that cut shall be well-made indeed. His name shall be Maitimo."
