This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

Galadriel’s face reappeared, reflected in the basin of clear water.
Melian smiled softly. “Look at you,” she murmured, reaching for Galadriel’s famously bright hair. “Mastery feels good, doesn’t it?”
Galadriel leaned into Melian’s palm, savoring the cool feeling against her flushed cheek. “I saw … I Saw. What will come to pass.”
“You need not share what may or may not exist. The threads of the Music tangle easily, what you Saw may not come to pass.”
“I do not want to leave you.”
Melian ran her thumb over Galadriel’s lips. “I will not spurn your devotion, my little nightingale.”
