This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

Galadriel stood at the quay, sea breeze rustling her hair. It was not the sea-longing that finally brought her to the sea, but weariness. The centuries of holding her realm safe from the Shadow were over, but she was tired, so tired. Celeborn squeezed her hand, silent at her side. Unfailingly loyal, her husband was – whatever needed to be said had already been said, in thousands of little ways, in millions of kisses over the millennia. He kissed her cheek, now, and drifted back to shore, a silent watcher as Galadriel boarded the ship that would finally take her home.
