The Fires of Autumn

For Ambarussa, autumn hurts.

The prompt was an image of a bright autumnal scene, with the description: 'Red, orange and yellow leaves on the forest floor; some are blurred from motion. The background, a path through the forest, is blurred, with the sun setting in the distance.'

At this time of year, the whole world feels as if it is on fire.

The red-gold leaves swirl in the wind like flickering flames

And constantly crackle under our feet.

The Sun sinks low, blazing like the burning ships,

Finding us even as we flee.

And always, always that inescapable smell of smoke.

How we long for the night and the stars,

For the colourless cold of winter, and the silence of snow,

And then for all the hopeful greens of spring to come again.

How we crave an end to the pain, and the anguish - and the Oath!
