In a book as full of death as the Quenta Silmarillion, grief and mourning are surprisingly absent. The characters who receive grief and mourning—and those who don't—appear to do so due to narrative bias. Grief and mourning (or a lack of them) serve to draw attention toward and away from objectionable actions committed by characters.
Tolkien, Lunatic Physicists, and Abnegation by Cynthia (Cindy) Gates
This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

Fingon was a king whether or not he used the title. He was a king because people chose to follow him, people who were lords themselves, with their own liegefolk. And the model for lordship at that level among the Noldor was kingship.

Band of the Red Hand by heget
Centered around a reoccurring cast of original characters - or at least characters unnamed in the text - from Nargothrond, namely the ten companions of Finrod and Beren and their friends who did not go. The name references two things: first the red hand in Beren\'s sigil, the second is the name of Matt Cauthon\'s army from The Wheel of Time. The other unifying feature of these stories is that they are often fusions or at least partly based on characters from other series (like WoT) adapted into The Silmarillion.

Eventually I\'ll have at least a vingette for each of the ten who died in Tol-in-Gaurhoth; the other half of the project is Release from Bondage and any spin-offs or sequels.

Artíreverse by WendWriter
Artíre the Watcher is an observer who likes drama for its own sake. He hates the thought of taking sides - he\'s more of a double agent. When Sauron inveigles him into a scheme against the Valar with the promise of a spectacle to enjoy, Artíre is forced to side with Melkor to satisfy his love of conflict. This kicks off a cycle of feuding that never really gets resolved and changes Artíre forever. Later on, he becomes the Watcher in the Water at Moria.
